What does AI think about coaches?

We often discuss the future of our profession, coaching. A few years ago, we were pondering whether clients knew the difference between a life coach and a business coach, or how executive coaching differed from business coaching. But today, these are no longer our primary concerns.

Numerous coaching platforms exist, some openly, others not, aiming to teach AI to coach through their interfaces, based on processes conducted in over 50 languages. We are working with - not just one - such company, diligently teaching them. Given the millions of analyzed coaching hours, it is certain that artificial intelligence will soon become a far better coach - a better listener, questioner, and reflective partner - than all MCC coaches combined. AI won't have bad days, won't project personal experiences onto situations, won't be influenced by its subconscious, and most importantly, can dedicate 100% of its attention to the client, unlike humans, whose maximum attention might peak at 80% even in the most focused moments.

Try asking ChatGPT to persuade your 8-year-old throwing a tantrum to put on their coat. You'll witness a level of assertive parenting like never before. And yes, the coat gets worn. True story!

Whether AI will be (or already is) better than human coaches is not in question, as it will indeed help solve any problem within 20 minutes. The question is whether it is in the interest of the platform providers to resolve your challenges in such a short time. Hollywood thrives on exploring this moral dilemma, so I'll leave it to them.

What interests me more: does the client in coaching really need to solve their difficulty within 20 minutes with the help of a coach?

Is it not about releasing tension?

Is it not about needing someone to listen?

Is it not about building trust in the coach to accept his/her feedback and reflection?

Is it not about needing to think out loud?

In other words, will efficiency become the sole measure of coaching?

We don't have good answers to these dilemmas yet. We observe, practice, experience, and search for what will be our added value as humans in the coaching profession. Now, I'm off to ask AI about this...

Disclaimer:

For now, we are still coached by flesh-and-blood humans with our flaws, 80% attention span, but with genuine empathy, attunement, and understanding. Last chance! Last chance? :-)
