No consulting, no making conversation, no psychology. Certainly not just a bunch of random questions. If we do our job well, you’ll make a lot of new realizations about your own operation
between two sessions. Business coaching is not consulting, not making conversation and not psychology, either. You won’t be lying on a sofa; the coach won’t be listening to your endless tirades or solve your problems for you. You won’t even be able to vent your anger as Robert De Niro’s mob boss in Analyze This.
Nevertheless, it’ll make your life better, as long as you choose a good coach, that is. According to the Hungarian group of the International Coaching Federation, i.e., the world’s largest association of professional coaches (whose board you may have seen some of us on): Coaching is a partnership with a client, a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires clients to bring the best out of themselves both personally and professionally. Coaching is a standalone service that is different from therapy, consulting, mentoring and training as well. The participants of a coaching process may experience that:
- they see their personal challenges and opportunities differently;
- their thinking and decision-making capacity improves;
- their personal efficiency grows;
- their self-confidence increases and
- they get closer to fulfilling their role in their work and life.
Although the definition is perhaps a bit long, it is very good and contains every necessary element. So, if you didn’t take the trouble to read the whole thing, here’s a shorter version the way you would explain it to your children. Imagine you’re a flywheel driven toy car. If you stop, the coach cranks you up and you keep on going all by yourself. If your coach is good, you’ll roll forward a lot even after just one cranking. If you can’t imagine being a toy car like that because you’ve never stopped midway or you never need anyone to make you roll forward faster, don’t hire a coach. If you hired one and you did roll forward a bit, but you ran out of juice, or perhaps your coach didn’t think of measuring how far and where exactly you rolled,
find another coach.
